an anilox roller is the fundamental component of a coating system. it is the roller which transfers the coating from the anilox or reverse angle doctor blade chamber to the rubber roller.

the anilox is a precision engraved roller, designed and carefully manufactured to apply exactly the correct volume of coating. there are two main types of anilox roller generally in use in metal decorating:

                  1. mill engraved chrome anilox roller

                  2. laser engraved ceramic anilox roller

specification of anilox rollers

an anilox roller is specified for the type of coating, taking into account the process and the type of work, the specifications commonly in use for anilox rollers are:

        screen count

        angle of engraving

        depth

        volume

an optimum engraving is achieved when all these factors are balanced in relation to the type of coating and the quality and film weight required.

the screen count is quoted in lines per linear inch (lpi), and is a measure of the number of cells across the anilox.

typical figures are 25lpi to 200lpi, etc. the screen count is fixed in relation to the film weight of the coating, e.g. mgms per square inch or grams per square metre.

the angle of engraving indicates how the cells were engraved and therefore how they line up across the anilox. for example, in laser engraving, the angles may be 30°, 45° or 60°:

the depth of the cells is measured in microns.(1 µm = 0.001mm)

the volume of the cell is measured in bcm (CBM/in2).
